Captains Log Stardate 92300.97

I stumbled across two of my best friends from college this morning, or rather across their blogs because they both live way too far away for accidental stumbling in person. I loved seeing these snippets from their current lives and realized I miss having my sister post all the general good/bad/in-between from our lives. So - what's new (starting where Paige left of with Adventures of an Atherton) :

Sheldon rocking out
Sheldon survived his crazy and unexpected hospitalization, no worse for the wear and with a super cool looking scar that could have been from a knife fight if it wasn't from getting the defibrillator implanted. Since that time he has discovered that he can get away with anything if he says, 'I came back from the dead for you'. He has a good point. He also joined a band! Now when I say I'm with the band I'm not even lying! Not bad for a cylon.

Paige got engaged (that's right ladies, Chuck put a ring on it) and is set to tie the knot right around May next year! They've got the venue, the hotels, and the dress all ready and it's still most of a year away so they are ahead of the curve. Paige looks ah-mazing in the dress, although did any of us really think that might not be the case? Honestly she could wear a burlap sack and make them popular, but the dress she picked is really stunning. I'd put up a picture but Chuck doesn't want to see the dress before the wedding. How cute is that?

I'm stand in maid-of-honor in case the real maid-of-honor can't make it due to an extreme case of baby on the way. As a result I'm attempting to take my MCAT early so as to not have to study during her shindig! 'MCAT?' you say...

In the summer last year I up and quit my fancy pants finance job in exchange for med school. At least in theory, right now it's pre-med at Columbia University where they have this handy program for people career changing into medicine! I get to take all my pre-med classes alongside both a handful of other career changers and a majority of true blue undergrads, people that were (on average) 7 years old when I started college the first time around just for perspective. Doogie Howser I am not. Not to worry, I'm still just as hip and with it as I was the first time through:

I know, I know, ridiculously high standards.

I spent the first summer of the program working at Memorial Sloan-Kettering doing computational biology for cancer research, and the first year of classes taking all the Gen Chem you could imagine while continuing my cancer bio research for the first semester, then switching to a wet lab that studies rhythm abnormalities in the heart (very related to Sheldon's dealio). I got to watch live open-heart surgeries, read EKGs, do some dissections, and make fun solutions that have enzymes that do cool stuff like breaking down all the lipids in our cardiac tissue samples.  I even have my own pair of scrubs and lab coat! It has my name written in it in magic marker like I'm 8 and about to go off to summer camp. Be jelly.

Too Legit to Quit

It turns out school is just as awesome as I remember it being. I've met some great new friends, although sadly they take fewer funny-face photos. Perhaps they just need encouragement? Also I got to go on spring break! Yep - that's still a thing, who knew?!

Friends making responsible faces (Clara, Me, Ying, Elizabeth)
Also still a thing - SUMMER VACATION! Three glorious months of finally discovering what it means to live in NYC. I got to do whatever I wanted which included a ton of tutoring, baby siting, volunteering and shadowing because I'm a dork and that stuff is super fun! Plus the baby is French and helps me practice my pronunciation (still hard to say my 'g's properly, I'm pretty sure the kid thinks I've got a speech impediment) and when I shadow I get to use a stethoscope like a boss (I am not yet the murmur whisperer but I'm working on it). I also traveled, went to museums, stayed out till 4 am for Hillary's bachelorette party, kitty sat, started swing dancing again, joined a gym and *actually went*, and had time to finish every single book from book club - success!
Yeah - that kind of summer/spring break

All good things must come to an end, and summer gave up the ghost after Labor Day. I'm back in classes this time taking Modern Dance (very sciencey trust me), Bio, Orgo and Bio Lab on top of trying to continue as much shenanigans as possible.

Will attempt to keep you posted!

- K
